Tamil Nadu Weather Update: India is currently witnessing a stark weather divide. While northern and western regions continue to experience a steady rise in temperatures, a low-pressure system is set to bring unseasonable February rainfall and thunderstorms to the southern peninsula. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy downpours are anticipated in parts of South Tamil Nadu and South Kerala on February 21 and 22.
Across Tamil Nadu, several areas are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. This wet spell will also likely extend to North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal.
Regional Heavy Rainfall Warnings
Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for the following districts on Saturday:
- Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi
- Tenkasi, Virudhunagar and Theni
On Sunday, the focus of heavy rain is expected to shift slightly toward Dindigul, Madurai and Theni. This weather activity is being driven by a trough over the equatorial Indian Ocean and the southwest Bay of Bengal, which may develop into a low-pressure area by late Saturday.
Forecast For Chennai And South India
- Chennai Weather:
The capital is bracing for temperatures between 24°C and 32°C. Due to the coastal low-pressure system, humidity levels will remain high. Residents should expect partly cloudy skies with a high probability of light to moderate rain and occasional thunderstorms featuring gusty winds.
Kerala And Mahe: Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms predicted for February 21, 22 and 23.

- Karnataka Weather Update
The state will see a temperature range of 18°C to 31°C.
Bengaluru: Clear skies with a pleasant daytime high of 28°C.
Coastal Karnataka: Expect unseasonably high humidity and heat.
