Tamil Nadu Weather Alert: Several parts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, are expected to receive moderate rains on Saturday, May 17, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre. A yellow alert has also been placed in 16 districts of the state.

Heavy rain is expected today in the districts of Krishnagiri, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri, Salem, Kallakurichi, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, and Karaikal.

Chennai is expected to get thunderstorms, lightning, and mild to moderate rain, according to the meteorological service.

Intense thunderstorms have already been observed in the districts of Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvannamalai on Saturday noon.

"Light to moderate #Rains approaching parts of #Chennai suburbs. At times it could be heavy as the storms move through the city. The deepening of the UAC clearly shows convection strengthening over the Bay," weather blogger Chennai Rains said in a post.

In its daily bulletin, the meteorological service stated that the maximum temperature is expected to be between normal and below normal on Saturday, and then below normal by between 2 and 4 degrees in a few areas over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from Sunday till Wednesday.

"Chennai chances too, will increase as the UAC comes closer. Note Chennai rarely gets rains in May month from thunderstorms, even a light rains is a blessing for us. We will surely get more rains this may. The rainfall recorded till 8.30 am on 17.05.2025 in Manual RG and Automatic RG in Tamil Nadu are enclosed," talking about Chennai weather, weather blogger R Pradeep John said in a post on social media.

Rainfall is expected in the districts of Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Tirupattur, Vellore, and Tiruvannamalai on Sunday. However, significant rains are anticipated on Monday in the Nilgiris, Ghat regions of Coimbatore, Erode, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Kallakurichi, and Tiruchirappalli districts.
