Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Tapan Kumar Deka got a one-year extension till June 2025 on Monday, according to an order by a Personnel Ministry. Notably, Tapan is a 1988-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. Currently, he is on a visit to Washington, DC.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension in service of Shri Tapan Kumar Deka, IPS (HP:88) as Director, Intelligence Bureau for a period of one year beyond 30.06.2024 or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in relaxation of the provisions of FR 56 (d) and Rule 16 (1A) of All India Services (Death cum Retirement Benefits) Rule, 1958," said an order by the government.
Who Is Tapan Deka?
- Tapan Deka has worked as the Intelligence Bureau's joint director (operations) for the past two decades.
- It is said that between 2012-15 he worked as a spy for India in many countries.
- He was one of the prominent leaders of the All Assam Student Union (AASU) and has also played a major role in the Assam movement.
- Deka has been serving in the northeast since the 1990s.
- As IB chief, Deka took on left-wing extremists in Central India, with the Maoists now restricted to the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh.
- He investigated the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack and brought the perpetrators to justice.
- He has vast experience dealing with terrorism and Islamic extremism in the country.
- Deka most notably oversaw operations against the terror group Indian Mujahideen, which coordinated a series of bombings and subversive acts across India in the 2000s.
