Elon Musk-led Tesla is set to begin operations in India. The company has now initiated the hiring process in the country following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Musk in the United States. In December of last year, it was reported that Tesla was scouting for office space in New Delhi.
Tesla shared a recruitment advertisement on its LinkedIn page. The company is looking for candidates for 13 positions, including customer-facing and backend roles. Tesla needs five people each in Delhi and Mumbai. The recruitment will be for roles such as consultants and service technicians. Customer Engagement Manager and Delivery Operations Specialist positions are specifically for Mumbai.
Tesla will also set up a plant in India. The company is currently looking for land and plans to establish the plant in states that are automotive hubs, with a preference for Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. It is believed that Tesla will invest around 3 billion dollars in this plant. It is also speculated that Tesla will manufacture its most affordable electric car, priced at around 2 million rupees, in India. Some time ago, it was reported that Tesla had also opened an office in Pune.
Elon Musk’s company is actively searching for space in Delhi and its surrounding areas, where it plans to open its office. According to media reports, discussions are underway between DLF and Tesla. The company is looking for 3,000 to 5,000 square feet of space to set up a Consumer Experience Center. Additionally, for delivery and service operations, Tesla needs a space three times larger than this.
The news about Tesla starting its operations in India has been circulating for years. Recently, Prime Minister Modi met with Elon Musk in the United States. Tesla had maintained its distance due to high tariffs in India, but now the government has reduced the basic customs duty on cars priced over $40,000 from 110 per cent to 70 per cent.
