Thiruvananthapuram Metro Update: The Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) on Friday informed that the Kerala government has approved the first-phase alignment of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail project. While providing details, the authority stated that the first phase alignment will connect several key regions of the city, including Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor bus stand, Central Railway Station, Secretariat, and Medical College. It informed that the final decision was taken after a secretary-level meeting, adding that the project will significantly boost the regional connectivity.

While providing details, the authority stated that the most ideal alignment for the project will be from Pappanamcode to Eenchakkal, adding that it will provide convenience to thousands of commuters on a daily basis. The KMRL further stated that the plan includes several key stations, including Pappanamcode, Kaimanam, Karamana, Killipalam Junction, Thampanoor, Secretariat, Palayam, Plamoodu, and Pattom.

Apart from this, the corridor will also pass through other stations, such as Murinjapalam, Medical College, Ulloor, Pongumoodu, Sreekaryam, Pangappara, Gurumandiram, Karyavattom, Technopark Phase-I (interchange station), Technopark Phase-III, Kulathoor, Technopark Phase-II, Akkulam Lake, Kochuveli, Venpalavattom, Chakka, the airport, and Eenchakkal, The Hindu reported.

Earlier, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) had asked the state government to ensure that the metro project connects with the airports to boost the regional connectivity. The KMRL had stated that apart from improving the connectivity, the project will also boost the financial activities in this region. Apart from the metro corridor, the authority will also build other key projects, including the Sreekaryam, Ulloor, and Pattom flyovers.

The KMRL is also set to launch a freight service on its network, which will be modelled on the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation’s (DMRC) framework. The service will operate during non-peak hours, transporting non-perishable, packaged goods while ensuring uninterrupted convenience for passengers.
