West Bengal's ruling party, Trinamool Congress (TMC), has suspended MLA Humayun Kabir after he triggered a massive political row in the state with his proposal to build a Babri Mosque replica in Murshidabad.

Speaking about the suspension, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim questioned the intent behind such a move by Kabir. He said, "We noticed that one of our MLAs from Murshidabad suddenly declared that he would build the Babri Masjid. Why suddenly Babri masjid? We already warned him. As per the decision of our party, TMC, we are suspending MLA Humayun Kabir."

"Humayun Kabir is suspended from the party. With the approval of our chairman Mamata Banerjee and with the consent of our general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, the party has suspended Humayun Kabir," he added.

Kabir, however, is undeterred and lashed out at the TMC. While talking to the media, Kabir announced that he would resign from the party and would float a new party. He said, "I will resign from TMC tomorrow. If required, I will announce a new party on 22nd December."

Kabir had sparked controversy after he announced to lay the foundation of the replica Babri Masjid on December 6. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also reportedly displeased with Humayun Kabir for making a controversial move, following which the party decided to suspend him.

Kabir also dropped out of Banerjee's rally in Murshidabad to protest against the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose had questioned CM Mamata Banerjee on why Kabir should not be arrested, as his statements were creating a law and order situation.

"The reports I have received from the field, intelligence agencies, and local opinion leaders indicate that someone is deliberately trying to turn Murshidabad into a hub of scandal. This will not be allowed. If communal sentiments are stirred, the state and its government will not remain mute spectators," he had said.
