The operational dates of atleast four special trains run by the Southern Railway have been extended. The revised schedules are as follows: No 06067 Chennai Egmore – Nagercoil Vande Bharat Weekly Special on Thursdays will be run till April 25. No 06068 Nagercoil – Chennai Egmore Vande Bharat Weekly Special on Thursdays will be run till April 25. No 06030 Tirunelveli – Mettupalayam Weekly Special on Sundays will be till May 26 and no 06029 Mettupalayam–Tirunelveli Weekly Special will be run till May 27.

In 2023–24, Southern Railway recorded a 10 per cent rise in its gross revenue of Rs 12,020 crore. “The annual gross revenue comprises passenger earnings of `7,151 crore, freight earnings of 3,674 crore and an amount of 570 crore and 624 crore towards other earnings,” said a railway official.

The Southern Railway said in a press release that they have been drawing a lot of passengers since introducing the Vande Bharat and Bharat Gaurav trains.

This year, eight new pairs of VB train services were launched: Coimbatore-Bengaluru Cantonment-Coimbatore, Chennai-Mysuru-Chennai, Tirunelveli-Chennai-Tirunelveli, Vijayawada-Chennai-Vijayawada, and Chennai-Coimbatore-Chandigarh.

Additionally, the speed enhancement projects have raised the sectional speed to 110 kmph in a network spanning 1,272 km and to 130 kmph for a distance of 145 km from Arakkonam to Jolarpet. 170 passenger trains' transit times have decreased as a result of the speed increase.

Railways Achieve Record Revenue In FY 2023-24

Railways achieved their highest-ever revenue of Rs 2.56 lakh crore in 2023-24, with 1,591 MTs of freight loaded, surpassing the previous year. Key cargoes included coal, iron ore, and cement. Electrification and new line records are set.

The Southern Railway has witnessed a jump in the passenger earnings of Rs 7,151 crore resulting in an overall gross revenue of Rs 12,020 crore.
