In a bid to improve the transportation services in Kashmir, the administration has given a nod to global ride-sharing giants Uber and Ola to launch their services in the Union territory. Along with this, the Transport Department has also provided the city with smart buses and e-rickshaws.
“Uber and Ola have been issued licenses by the department. They are now authorised to begin their operations in Kashmir,” The Tribune India quoted Joint Transport Commissioner Vinay Samotra as saying.
Although the services will be of great benefit to locals and tourists, regional cab service providers are fearing a threat to their business with their launch.
“We are a local start-up, with a major portion of revenue coming from tourism. A multinational company like Uber or Ola will deal a huge blow to us. Their entry into the local market means that they will eat our revenues,” said Basit Qayoom, managing director of a local cab service.
Currently, Aala, Jugnoo and Nova are the top cab service providers in Jammu and Kashmir. Aala reportedly has 350 cabs registered, of which 200 are currently operational in the city. Whereas Jugnoo and Nova have 140 and 135 cabs respectively.
