Udaipur district collector Arvind Poswal told ANI, "This incident took place in the early hours today. We received info about a fight between two children, in which one child was attacked on his thighs with a knife. The wound was deep, and the child was immediately taken to the hospital."
He said that he had met the child and that his condition was stable. The cause of the incident is being looked into by the police. Poswal also issued a public plea, cautioning people not to believe any rumours or misleading information. In addition to the individual who attacked with a knife, his father has also been taken into custody, he added.
The police are also looking to see if other students are involved in the matter. He assured that those involved would receive punishment accordingly.
"I would appeal that if anyone receives any info or forwards from WhatsApp, please verify it first with the administration, because there might be people who will try to spoil the atmosphere. It is our duty to maintain peace in the city,” the district collector added.
The administration has imposed Section 144 in the district as the incident led to communal tension in the area. As soon as the incident was reported, members of Hindu organizations gathered in the Madhuban area of the city and protested.
The enraged crowd threw stones and set fire to three or four vehicles that were parked in a garage. Yogesh Goyal, the superintendent of police in Udaipur, stated that more police officers have been stationed there to uphold peace and order. The defendant has been taken into custody. He pleaded with everyone to keep the peace and ignore gossip.
