Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar was detained by the police on Friday during a demonstration against the alleged rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

"We have told the TMC's police that as long as we are here, they will not arrest any woman, we will not let any woman be harmed... Atrocities against women must stop," the BJP leader said as the Kolkata Police detained him and other protestors.

He also lashed out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose party, the TMC, is facing allegations of trying to shield the culprits in the horrific case. "Mamata Banerjee does not need permission for a rally but when the BJP goes to do something then permission is needed, all the rules are only for the BJP," Majumdar said.

The union minister also reiterated demands for the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal. "Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal should immediately resign from his post... Such a person cannot be the Kolkata Police Commissioner, he should take responsibility for this incident and resign."

MAMATA PINS VANDALISM BLAME ON OPPN

Earlier in the day, CM Banerjee led a protest rally from Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday, demanding justice for the victim. She accused the CPI(M) and the BJP of orchestrating the vandalism that took place at RG Kar hospital during a midnight protest over the rape-murder case.

The TMC supremo alleged that the two opposition parties in the state were attempting to obscure the truth behind the incident by spreading fake news on social media. She also urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe from Kolkata Police earlier this week, to resolve the case by Sunday and demanded that the culprits be hanged.

"We want the truth to come out, but some quarters are spreading lies to mislead people. Attempts are being made to hide the truth by circulating fake news on social media. We condemn these activities. We want the culprits to be punished," she said while addressing the rally.
