Union Budget 2026: In the Union Budget for 2026, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman made significant announcements aimed at the development of the Northeast states, with particular focus on poll-bound Assam. The government has proposed the development of an 'East Coast Industrial Corridor' with a well-connected node at Durgapur in West Bengal, and creation of five tourism destinations in five 'Purvodaya' States.
One of the standout proposals was the launch of a scheme for the development of Buddhist circuits across six Northeastern states Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. This initiative is part of a broader effort to showcase the region's rich spiritual heritage and enhance its tourism appeal. She made a series of announcements spanning various sectors, including agriculture, finance, healthcare, employment, industry, and tourism.
For Assam, which is preparing for elections later this year, the Finance Minister underscored the importance of the Buddhist circuits project, describing it as a historic step that honours the region’s spiritual legacy. Sitharaman stated that the initiative is intended to highlight the North-East's rich spiritual heritage. She described the scheme for the development of Buddhist circuits in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and other Northeastern states as a historic step that honours India’s spiritual legacy. It is expected to transform the region into a hub of culture, commerce, and connectivity.
The primary objective of the Buddha Circuit Scheme is not only to preserve religious sites but also to make them more accessible. Special funds will be allocated under the scheme to improve road and rail connectivity in these states. Furthermore, bilingual Pilgrimage Interpretation Centres will be established to assist visitors, providing them with detailed information about the local history and teachings of the Lord Buddha.

Additionally, Sitharaman unveiled plans for the East Coast Industrial Corridor, with Durgapur in West Bengal identified as a key node.
With 5 tourism destinations set to be developed across five Purvodaya states, Sitharaman unveiled further developmental measures, including the creation of five tourism destinations across the northeastern states and a provision for 4,000 e-buses to enhance regional connectivity.
