Kerala Rail Project: In the election, Kerala got two new rail projects, aiming to ease travel woes. Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi on Tuesday announced that the central government has approved two railway projects. Gopi asserted that the new rail projects will ease the rail travel woes of people of the state and ensure smoother movement of goods.

What Are New Rail Projects?

The two rail projects are: Doubling of Alappuzha-Ambalappuzha line and the Palakkad town-Parali bypass line. Gopi, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism, shared information about the project on Facebook.

Rs 324.16 crore has been sanctioned for the doubling of the 12.66 kilometer long Alappuzha-Ambalappuzha line, which will help to address the bottleneck on the Ernakulam-Thuravoor-Kayamkulam route. The doubling of the line will enable the railways to operate nine new passengers trains on both directions daily and smooth movement of goods. The commencement of the projects will lead to a huge increase in the revenue of the railways and boost the local economy.

Rs 163.57 crore has been sanctioned for the 1.8 km Palakkad town-Parali bypass line. The bypass project will reduce the waiting time due to the change of train engines at Palakkad junction. The union minister said the project will also reduce the travel time of passenger trains by 40-44 minutes and that of freight trains by 120 minutes. The Palakkad town-Parali bypass line project aims to improve the punctuality of trains to Shornur, Thiruvananthapuram and Pollachi.

These projects will enhance the railway infrastructure of Kerala and reduce the travel time of rail passengers, Gopi asserted.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Assembly elections are likely be held in Kerala in April 2026 to elect 140 members of the House. Currently, the election dates have not been announced. The poll body will announce the schedule before May as the tenure of the Kerala Assembly is scheduled to end on 23 May.
