Uttar Pradesh: A horrifying incident has emerged from Maharishi Devaraha Baba Medical College in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, where students and staff unknowingly consumed water from a storage tank that contained a decomposing corpse for nearly ten days.

The matter came to light when a foul smell began coming from the water supply. Cleaning staff were sent to check the cemented tank located on the fifth floor and were shocked to find an unidentified body in an advanced stage of decomposition. Police were immediately informed, and the body was retrieved and sent for a post-mortem, India Today reported.

Authorities later confirmed that water from the contaminated tank had been in use across both the outpatient department (OPD) and the wards during that period.

District Magistrate Divya Mittal has been assigned to investigate the matter. The college principal, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Barnwal, has been suspended. In his place, Dr. Rajni, the Head of the Anatomy Department at Etah Medical College, has been appointed as acting principal until further notice.

During her inspection, the DM found that the tank meant to be secured at all times was left unlocked. A video of her confronting the principal about this security lapse has since gone viral online.

In response to the crisis, the contaminated tank has been sealed, and water tankers have been arranged to ensure safe supply. Additionally, a five-member committee led by the Chief Development Officer has been formed to investigate the lapse and is expected to submit its report within two days.
