Two individuals have been arrested in connection with an alleged racially charged attack on a woman doctor from Nagaland, who is currently posted at AIIMS Gorakhpur. The victim, a third-year resident doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, was returning to the campus from a mall on Sunday evening when the accused allegedly followed her for over a kilometre. They confronted her near the institute’s gates, reportedly subjecting her to racial slurs, physical assault, and stalking.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma, both residents of Deoria district. The incident took place at around 8 pm when the doctor was walking towards Gate Number 2 of the institute, located near the Army Camp.

According to the victim’s complaint, the three men followed her for nearly 1.5 kilometres, making lewd remarks and racial slurs. One of the men is said to have removed his shirt in a bid to intimidate her, while another allegedly touched her inappropriately. The doctor raised an alarm, prompting the men to flee the scene.

The National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) took to social media to highlight the incident, condemning the attack and expressing the "deep shock, humiliation, and trauma" the resident doctor endured. The federation pointed out that the men had used racially derogatory comments and stereotypes targeting her northeastern background.

"She tried to confront them, but instead they stalked and followed her on the road toward AIIMS Gate No. 2, hurling abuses & slang. One of them deliberately removed his shirt to intimidate. Near the army camp at Gate No. 2, one man suddenly slapped even her on the buttocks," the federation alleged in a post on X.

"This left deep shock, humiliation & trauma on our resident doctor. As a doctor dedicated to women's health & bringing new life, she was violated near her own institution," it added.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma also condemned the alleged molestation of the female doctor from Nagaland, expressing outrage over the incident. He highlighted that racial discrimination and sexual harassment of women from the North East should not be treated as fleeting headlines.

The Chief Minister termed the incident "deeply shameful" and called for stringent action against the perpetrators.

In his post on X, Sangma said, "Racial discrimination and sexual harassment of women from the North East should not just be a headline, sensationalised, forgotten and revived every time a fresh incident appears. The racial and sexual abuse of a resident Doctor of AIIMS Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh from Nagaland is deeply shameful."

"Outraging a woman's modesty is not what a civilised nation should tolerate. They are your sisters and daughters, too. Urge the authorities to take stringent actions against the perpetrators," he added.

Following the complaint, a case has been registered under sections 74 (Assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 296(a) (Obscene acts and songs), 351(3) (Criminal intimidation), and 352 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of peace) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
