The Uttarakhand government is all set to introduce a bill related to the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the extended session of the Assembly starting from February 5. The UCC aims to provide similar laws for people of all religions which will prohibit polygamy, implement similar divorce laws and also bring a law that will mandate registration for live-in relationships.
The UCC bill is expected to be tabled in the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6, making Uttarakhand the first state in the country to present a bill to bring uniformity in the laws for the people of all faiths.
The draft of the UCC was prepared by an expert committee and handed over to the BJP-led government on January 31. The committee, that drafted the bill, included more than 400 sections in the draft, covering various aspects of personal law, such as women’s right to property, inheritance, adoption, and compliance with local and tribal traditions and customs.
