Uttarakhand Chardham Yatra 2025: Pilgrims undertaking the Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand this year may have to pay higher transportation costs, as bus and taxi fares are expected to rise by 10-20 per cent. The fare increase is anticipated with the commencement of the pilgrimage on April 30, coinciding with the opening of Yamunotri and Gangotri Dham.

Citing rising costs of diesel, insurance, and vehicle maintenance, Chardham Yatra Joint Rotation, which manages transport services for the yatra, has urged the government to approve a fare hike. The organisation pointed out that the existing fare structure, fixed in July 2022, is outdated and needs revision to accommodate increased operational expenses.

In response to the transporters' demand, officials from the Transport Department have initiated discussions on a possible revision of fares. The Transport Department emphasises that the convenience of pilgrims remains a priority.  The State Transport Authority (STA) is expected to make a decision soon, a Jagran.com report stated.

Last year, transporters had demanded a 10 per cent fare increase, but the state government denied the request due to the Lok Sabha elections. This year, however, the transporters are firm on their demand. The government is exploring a balanced approach to prevent excessive financial strain on pilgrims while ensuring transport operators are adequately compensated.

Currently, taxi fares are determined based on a minimum distance of 80 kilometers. If the journey is shorter, passengers are still charged for an 80-kilometre journey. For longer trips, fares are calculated per km. Additionally, no waiting fee is charged for up to eight hours or for travel exceeding 200 km in a day.
