Kolkata Parents Viral Video: Many parents see prestigious schools as the ultimate gateway to their children's success. However, a couple from Kolkata is redefining this belief, proving that education can extend far beyond the walls of a classroom. A video of them sharing their unconventional approach to learning is now making rounds on social media.
Ditching traditional education, they have embraced “unschooling”—an unconventional approach that prioritises real-world experiences over textbooks. In a now-viral video, they boldly call formal schooling a “ big waste of time”, explaining how their children are growing and learning through hands-on activities rather than classroom lectures.
For this Kolkata couple, education is about exploration, not exams. Their kids learn history by traveling, grasp math through cricket, and gain knowledge from nature walks and workshops. Rejecting conventional career paths, they focus on entrepreneurship, creativity, and critical thinking—skills they believe schools fail to nurture. They argue that conventional schooling leaves kids mentally drained, limiting their ability to think beyond grades and assignments. While their unconventional approach has sparked debate online, it challenges the traditional notion of learning.

The viral video was posted on Instagram by user 'shenaztreasury' with a caption explaining the concept of unschooling, "This is a new trend called UNSCHOOLING not to be confused with HOME SCHOOLING. Unschooling is a child-led, interest-driven learning approach without structured curriculums, while homeschooling follows a set curriculum taught at home, similar to traditional schooling." But she added, “For both home schooling and unschooling, the parents have to be very involved and hands on!!"
The video, shared three days ago, has garnered 22.4 million views, sparking mixed reactions online. Some users praised the concept, with one commenting, "Since education in India has turned into a business, this idea is extremely good." Another user supported the approach, writing, "This is amazing! Children should pursue knowledge that interests them, without the pressure of exams and tuitions. After all, you can’t judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree."
Not everyone agreed with the concept of unschooling. One user strongly opposed it, writing, "That’s nonsense. These kids have no formal education to fall back on. School might be tough, but it’s essential for overall development. Education is a basic right, and many underprivileged children have to fight for it."
Another user highlighted the broader purpose of schooling, commenting, "Schools aren’t just about academics; they shape social skills, discipline, and life lessons through peer interactions. While homeschooling is fine, traditional schools instill values that last a lifetime."
