Vaishno Devi Medical College Row: The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the National Medical Commission (NMC) on Tuesday revoked its Letter of Permission (LoP) granted to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence to run an MBBS course with 50 seats for the 2025-26 academic year. The move follows a surprise inspection by the National Medical Commission.

During the surprise inspection, the commission found serious shortcomings in the college’s infrastructure, faculty strength, and compliance with essential regulatory norms. The NMC stated that the action was taken after multiple complaints were received against the college, alleging that the college lacked essential infrastructure, clinical resources, and sufficient qualified staff.

Based on the inspection findings, the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) concluded that the college does not meet the standards required to enrol new MBBS students for the upcoming session, prompting the withdrawal of the LoP granted to the college to run an MBBS course for the 2025-26 session.

What Happens To Students Already Admitted In Vaishno Devi Medical College?

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday assured that students affected by the closure of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Medical College will be accommodated in other medical institutions through supernumerary seats.

According to news agency ANI, supernumerary seats are additional seats created over and above the intake approved by an authority, allowing affected students to continue their studies without impacting existing admissions.

“It is our legal responsibility to accommodate them. We will adjust them by creating supernumerary seats in colleges close to their homes so that their education does not suffer. We will do it," Abdullah told PTI.

The chief minister further said that measures will be taken to hold accountable those responsible for lapses in maintaining standards at the Vaishno Devi Medical College.
