Vice President Election: The opposition parties have commenced the process to select their joint candidate for the upcoming vice president election. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has been reportedly contacting the chiefs of the regional parties to field a common candidate for the INDIA block. The move is likely to deepen the ties among the opposition parties, as they have shown unity on several issues, including Operation Sindoor and Bihar SIR in the monsoon session of the parliament. The Election Commission announced the election for the vice president after Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post due to health reasons.

When is the last date to file nomination?

Earlier on Thursday, the Election Commission issued a notification for the vice presidential election scheduled to be held on September 9. The poll body emphasised that the last date for filing nominations is August 21, adding that the verification of documents will be done on August 22. The notification further stated that the last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 25.

What is the strategy of opposition parties? 

While there has been no concrete discussion on the selection of the candidate, the top opposition leaders are reportedly in contact to select the candidate. The opposition parties have agreed to file a common candidate to offer a strong challenge to the NDA government, reported PTI. However, a section of the opposition leaders believes that the opposition should announce its candidate only after the declaration of a candidate from NDA.

INDIA Block united on 'vote chori' allegations

Top opposition leaders on Thursday held a dinner meeting at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's residence after he accused the Election Commission and BJP of 'Vote Chori' (rigging polls). The opposition leaders vowed to fight against the BJP-EC's alleged vote theft model along with the revision of the voter list in Bihar. This was the first meeting of the opposition leaders after they had met at Mallikarjun Kharge's residence after the Lok Sabha elections in June 2024.
