Vijay Rupani, former Gujarat Chief Minister, was onboard an Air India flight that crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. As many as 242 passengers, including 2 pilots and 10 cabin crew, were onboard the Air India B787 Aircraft that crashed in a civilian area shortly after takeoff, ANI reported citing DGCA.
Among the people on board the London-bound flight were 169 Indians, 53 Britishers, 7 Portuguese and one Canadian, as per ANI.
A comprehensive rescue operation has been launched in the area. Three NDRF teams, comprising 90 personnel, have been rushed to the spot. Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Gujarat CM and Police Commissioner over the incident. He assured full assistance from the centre.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Minister of Civil Aviation, Rammohan Naidu, to take stock of the situation, ANI reported. The minister told the PM he was rushing to oversee the relief and rescue operation.
PM Modi has directed Naidu to ensure all necessary support is extended immediately and asked to be kept regularly updated on the situation.

The British government said they were working with the Indian authorities to seek information about the incident and ensure that assistance is provided to the affected UK citizens. A contact number, 020 7008 5000, has also been released for people who have concerns about their family and friends.
