Waqf Amendment Bill Live Updates: The Waqf Amendment Bill is being taken up in the Rajya Sabha after it got a nod from the lower house on Wednesday. The BJP-led NDA has a majority in the upper house with 125 MPs, including the BJP's 98, the JD(U)'s four, the NCP's three, the TDP's two, and six nominated MPs. Earlier on Wednesday, the bill was passed after a marathon debate. While 288 MPs in the Lok Sabha voted in the favour of the bill, 232 chose to vote against it.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, as proposed by a Joint Parliamentary Committee, in the Lok Sabha for consideration and passage. The Bill was presented after the Question Hour, and will follow an 8-hour discussion. The Bill seeks to improve the administration of Waqf properties, introduce technology-driven management, address complexities and ensure transparency. Kiren Rijiju opened the debate on the Bill and explained the nitigrities of the legislation. Introducing the Bill, he said the consultation process of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) was the largest ever exercise carried out by a parliamentary panel in India's democratic history.
The BJP-led NDA currently holds 293 MPs in the 542-member Lok Sabha, giving it the numbers required to pass the bill in the lower house. However, opposition parties may attempt to sway BJP allies, such as the JDU and TDP, to vote against the bill, potentially complicating its passage.
The Opposition has labelled the proposed amendment as "unconstitutional" and accused the BJP-led central government of trying to "strip" Muslims of their rights. The Bill was introduced last year and was subsequently referred to a joint parliamentary committee.

Ajit Pawar is also supporting PM Modi... Now that the bill is passed, we will fight one fight on the road and another in the Supreme Court. But we don't have much hope from the Supreme Court... If there are judges who want to be NHRC Chairman or want a Rajya Sabha seat after retirement, then there is going to be no justice. Under PM Modi's rule, there are a lot of judges who go and sit next to PM Modi as soon as they retire and get good posts...",
