Waqf Bill Row: Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Monday urged the opposition leaders to participate in the Waqf Amendment Bill debates in the Parliament. Rijiju further asked them to not mislead the minority population by spreading lies, adding that the bill is opposed by a handful of "powerful" people who had "taken over" the Waqf's properties. He further assured that the bill will not empower the authorities to snatch the lands and rights from the innocent Muslims.

"Some people are saying that this Waqf Amendment Bill is unconstitutional. Waqf rules have been in existence since before independence... All these provisions are already in existence. If the Waqf Act has been in existence since before independence, then how can it be illegal? Innocent Muslims are being told and misled by saying that the government is going to snatch the properties and rights of the Muslims," Rijiju was quoted as saying by the news agency ANI.

"Minorities Are Safest In India"

Rijiju further assured that the minorities are safest in India, adding that the same people were trying to mislead a section of the society during CAA. "The false things being spread by some people are very harmful for our society and nation. I would like to request everyone to please identify those leaders who are lying. These are the people who misguided the country during CAA... I am very proud to say that minorities are the safest in India, and minorities enjoy the best rights of freedom in India," Rijiju added.

The minority affairs minister further stated that some powerful people are trying to mislead the people by stating that the bill is unconstitutional. "There are a few powerful people who have encroached upon Waqf properties. They are misguiding people. They are saying the bill is unconstitutional. It's everyone's right to criticise things, but criticism must have some substance in it," Rijiju told ANI.

While the opposition leaders are claiming that their inputs were not considered during the revision of the bill, adding that the bill is "unconstitutional", the central government stated that they had already made the necessary changes, adding that the bill does not discriminate against the minorities.
