The Kochi Metro Rail Ltd stated that efforts are underway to replicate the eco-friendly Kochi Water in 18 locations across India. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has tasked KMRL with conducting a feasibility study to explore potential sites for similar water metro systems that would help people to commute easily through waterways in several Indian cities.
The proposed locations include the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati, Dal Lake in Jammu and Kashmir and island connections in Andaman and Lakshadweep. Other cities being considered are Ahmedabad, Surat, Mangaluru, Ayodhya, Dhubri, Goa, Kollam, Kolkata, Patna, Prayagraj, Srinagar, Varanasi, Mumbai, and Vasai, the KMRL release stated.
KMRL's Board of Directors recently approved the creation of a consultancy wing to advance this initiative. An in-house committee has been formed to lead the feasibility study, with provisions to bring in external experts if necessary.

KMRL emphasised that the Kochi Water Metro, with its modern facilities and environmentally sustainable design, has set a new benchmark for urban water transport. The feasibility study will evaluate areas with rivers, lakes, backwaters and coastal regions to identify the most suitable locations for implementing similar systems.
Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) will be prepared for selected sites based on the study's findings. This initiative aims to harness water bodies for sustainable urban transport, revolutionising mobility in cities nationwide.
KMRL highlighted that this ambitious project not only recognises Kerala’s expertise in sustainable development but also reinforces the state's leadership in modern transport innovation.
