Weather Updates: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a rain alert for several parts of the country, forecasting significant rainfall from March 11 to 15. North India, the eastern and northeastern states, as well as parts of South India, are expected to receive heavy showers due to two active cyclonic circulations. The inclement weather is expected to bring respite from the rising temperatures in Delhi-NCR and other regions.
According to the IMD, the first cyclonic circulation, originating in Iraq, is gradually moving towards India’s northern hilly states, bringing rain and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Simultaneously, a second cyclonic circulation has developed over Bangladesh, which will likely trigger heavy rainfall across Bihar, West Bengal and the northeastern states over the next five days.
Rain And Snowfall In North India
The IMD forecasts deteriorating weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand until March 15. Heavy rain and snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, are expected in these states. A 'yellow' alert has been issued for heavy rain and snow in parts of Himachal Pradesh.
Punjab and Haryana may also witness moderate to heavy rainfall, with thunderstorms and lightning on March 12 and 13. Rajasthan is expected to receive rainfall from March 13 to 15.
Eastern And Northeastern States To Experience Heavy Showers
The cyclonic circulation over Bangladesh will bring heavy rainfall to eastern and northeastern states, particularly Bihar, West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. The IMD has predicted continuous rain in these regions from March 11 to 15, with Arunachal Pradesh expecting heavy snowfall from March 11 to 13.
Southern India Also Braces For Rain
Rainfall is not limited to northern and eastern states, as South India is also likely to experience heavy downpours. The IMD has forecasted intense rain in four southern districts of Tamil Nadu, including Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi on March 12. Several other districts, including Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai and Ramanathapuram, are also likely to receive significant rainfall.
Kerala and Mahe are expected to see heavy rainfall between March 11 and 13. In response, the Tamil Nadu government has indicated that schools and colleges may be closed if the situation worsens. A warning has also been issued for fishermen in Kanniyakumari, advising them to avoid venturing into the sea.

Rajasthan has also recorded abnormally high temperatures. On March 12, Barmer reported a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Celsius, which is 7.5 degrees above normal. Jalore, Jaisalmer, Chittorgarh, and Jodhpur also witnessed above-average temperatures. However, a weak western disturbance may bring light rain or drizzle to parts of northwestern and northern Rajasthan between March 13 and 15.
