Weather In Delhi: India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR for rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and lightning on Friday, April 11. The weather is likely to bring much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave currently faced by residents. Delhi-NCR saw stormy weather on Thursday, April 10 evening which later brought a brief spell of rain, cooling down the temperatures. Apart from this, the recent weather changes led to the deaths of 25 people in Uttar Pradesh, four people in Jharkhand, and two people in Haryana and Uttarakhand. The weather department also stated that the crops in several regions got destroyed due to the heavy rain and strong winds.
Incoming Western Disturbance
Thursday evening brought dramatic skies as dust storms swept across Delhi, signalling the arrival of an incoming Western Disturbance.
“With the influence of the Western Disturbance, rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds are expected over northwest India during 10–11 April. As a result, heatwave conditions will reduce significantly from 10 April,” the IMD said.
The heat has been relentless over the past week, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius since Monday. On Wednesday night, Delhi recorded its warmest April night in three years, a sultry 25.9 degrees Celsius, which was 5.9 degrees above the seasonal average. This broke the previous day’s record of 25.6 degrees Celsius.

Thursday morning wasn’t any better. The minimum temperature once again settled at 25.9 degrees Celsius, leaving residents tossing and turning through the night.
Heatwave Likely To Return
While the upcoming showers may cool things down temporarily, the relief could be short-lived. Weather models suggest heatwave conditions may return to Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana from April 15 onwards.
Additionally, in a bold move CM Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government has announced to tackle the capital’s persistent dust pollution. The administration will install 1,000 water sprinklers on streetlight poles across the city in a bid to suppress airborne dust, especially in high-traffic areas.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told PTI that the sprinklers and smog guns will now be operated year-round, unlike the previous government’s seasonal approach.
