Weather Update: Starting today, January 28, North India is set to experience a combination of prolonged cold wave conditions, dense fog, and intermittent thunderstorms. This persistent cold spell is expected to tighten its grip across the plains, with cold wave conditions likely in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan over the next few days.

However, a shift in the weather conditions is likely as a fresh western disturbance is expected to intensify its activity towards the end of the month. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an approaching weather system is expected to trigger heavy rainfall and snowfall across the Himalayan region. The western disturbance is also likely to bring light rain and thunderstorms to the plains, including Delhi-NCR, on February 1.

Dense Fog And Cold Wave In THESE Regions

- As per the All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), dense fog is likely to occur during early morning and night hours in isolated pockets of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from January 28 to 30.

- Similar conditions are likely to occur in Uttarakhand on January 29 and 30, while Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, North Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar may see fog on January 28 and 29.

- Additionally, cold wave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from January 28 to 31, and in Himachal Pradesh from January 29 to 31.

Rainfall And Snowfall In Himalayan Region

- The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on January 28.

- Isolated light rainfall is likely to occur in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on January 28. These regions may also experience thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds reaching 40-50 kmph.

Fresh Western Disturbance To Bring Rain, Snowfall

A fresh western disturbance is likely to arrive in northwest India on the night of January 30, 2026. Under its influence, widespread rainfall and snowfall are likely over the Western Himalayan region on February 1 and 2.

During this same period, the adjoining plains are likely to experience similar conditions accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.
