Weather Today: North India continues to reel under intense winter conditions, with biting cold, dense fog and rising pollution levels disrupting daily life. Several parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh recorded very low minimum temperatures, while a thick blanket of fog in Delhi reduced visibility to near zero, affecting road and air traffic. Fresh snowfall in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has brought cheer to the tourists but has also led to disruptions on key routes.

In view of adverse weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for the New Year, urging residents to remain cautious. According to the latest weather bulletin, dense to very dense fog accompanied by a severe cold wave is likely to persist during the late-night and early-morning hours over Punjab, Haryana, East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Delhi, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh.

The Meteorological Department has also forecast light to moderate rainfall in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Rajasthan on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026.

IMD Issues Dense Fog Warning For THESE States

Dense to very dense fog is also likely to occur during late-night and early morning hours at isolated places across several regions. These include Himachal Pradesh till December 31; Uttarakhand till January 4; Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and western Uttar Pradesh from January 1 to 6; eastern Uttar Pradesh from January 2 to 6; Rajasthan from January 1 to 4; Madhya Pradesh till December 31; Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till January 3; Gangetic West Bengal from December 31 to January 3; Bihar till January 5; Jharkhand till December 31; Odisha from January 2 to 4; and Assam and Meghalaya along with Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura till January 4, 2026.

IMD Issues Severe Cold Day And Cold Wave Warning

According to the latest forecast, cold to severe cold day conditions are very likely to prevail in parts of Uttar Pradesh on December 30 and in Bihar on December 30 and 31. Cold day conditions are also expected at isolated locations over Himachal Pradesh on December 31 and January 1; Uttarakhand on December 30; Bihar from January 1 to 4; Jharkhand on December 30; Madhya Pradesh on December 30; western Uttar Pradesh on December 30; and eastern Uttar Pradesh during December 30 and 31, 2025.

Cold wave conditions are very likely to affect isolated areas of east Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh till December 31. Similar conditions are expected over west Rajasthan on January 2 and 3, Himachal Pradesh from December 31 to January 3, and Telangana and north interior Karnataka till January 1, 2026.

Snowfall In Jammu-Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh And Uttarakhand

The Meteorological Department has forecast isolated to widespread heavy rainfall or snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad from December 30 to January 1. Meanwhile, isolated to scattered light to moderate rain or snow is likely over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from December 30 to January 2.

IMD Forecasts Rain In Delhi, UP And Other States

Adding to the winter chill, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for isolated light to moderate rainfall over Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh on December 31 and January 1, while west Rajasthan may experience similar conditions on December 31.
