Weather Update: A severe cold wave continued across northern India as temperatures fell further on Wednesday. In Jammu and Kashmir, freezing conditions caused Dal Lake and several other water bodies to freeze, while Srinagar and other areas witnessed their lowest night-time temperatures of the season. Himachal Pradesh also remained in the grip of intense cold, with sub-zero temperatures in seven districts. The chill extended to Delhi. The national capital saw a minimum temperature of 5.8 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 17.5 degrees Celsius.

Srinagar recorded a low of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius on Wednesday night, a drop of 3.5 degrees from Tuesday's minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, officials said. It was the city's coldest night of the season, with temperatures 3.2 degrees below normal. Sonamarg in Ganderbal district was the coldest place in Jammu and Kashmir, recording a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 9.2 degrees Celsius.

The Kashmir Valley is currently going through a 40-day period of extreme cold called 'Chilla-e-Kalan', in which night temperatures drop to several degrees below the freezing point and the possibility of snowfall is highest.

Himachal Pradesh Weather

As per IMD, Himachal Pradesh will witness dry but cloudy conditions till January 20. Night temperatures will see a significant drop in the valley by January 10.

Kukumseri was the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh, recording a minimum temperature of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius, while Tabo recorded a low of minus 8.9 degrees Celsius. The AMD has issued a warning of dense fog in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur from January 9 to 12.

Delhi Weather

Delhi is also experiencing severe cold conditions. The minimum temperature dropped to 5.8 degrees Celsius, the lowest so far this year and the third lowest of the winter season. The minimum temperature was 1.1 degrees Celsius below the normal average.

Palam was the coldest station, with a minimum temperature of 4.8 degrees Celsius. The International Monetary Fund (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the capital on Friday due to dense fog.

UP Weather

The cold wave also affected Uttar Pradesh, where dense fog covered several districts. Lucknow, recorded a maximum temperature of 16.9 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 6.4 degrees Celsius. Cold weather also continued in many parts of Haryana and Punjab.

Narnaul recorded a minimum temperature of 4 degrees Celsius, the coldest in Haryana. Bathinda was the coldest city in Punjab, with a minimum temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. Rajasthan also experienced severe cold, with Sikar district recording a minimum temperature of 2.5 degrees Celsius.
