Weather Update: North India is experiencing a prolonged cold wave, with dense fog causing widespread disruptions in several regions. Today, the weather will remain chilly, with fog continuing to shroud various states. While the intensity of the cold wave is expected to ease slightly, providing some respite to residents, the foggy conditions are set to persist.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), no significant cold wave is expected over the north-western parts of the country in the coming days. However, the fog will remain dense, and there could be light rain or snowfall in some areas.

Road Accidents in Uttar Pradesh Amid Thick Fog

On Saturday, Uttar Pradesh witnessed the thickest fog of the season, leading to multiple accidents across the state. Over 40 vehicles collided in several locations, claiming the lives of seven people, including a toddler aged just 18 months. More than 50 others were injured as a result of the fog-related incidents.

Visibility was severely reduced, with fog causing near-zero visibility on major roads and highways. As a result, numerous drivers lost control of their vehicles. Additionally, over 100 trains were delayed across the state, inconveniencing thousands of passengers and leading to disruptions in the daily commute.

Weather Update: Check Updates For J&K, Punjab, Himachal & Other States

1. Jammu & Kashmir

A cold wave continued to affect Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, with temperatures falling below freezing in several areas of the Valley. Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of -4 degrees C.

Pahalgam saw a temperature of -2.6 degrees C, Gulmarg -4.2 degrees C, and Sonmarg -2.9 degrees C. The extreme cold has caused parts of Dal Lake and other water bodies to freeze, creating considerable difficulties for both locals and tourists.

2. Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is seeing fresh snowfall in the Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts, affecting local residents and tourists. In Spiti, 25 tourist vehicles were stranded in the snow around the Shinkula Pass area. Authorities responded promptly with a rescue operation, successfully evacuating the trapped individuals.

However, the snowfall also led to a rise in temperatures in other areas. In Shimla and Chopal, temperatures increased slightly, with Siyobag’s minimum temperature rising from 1.0 degrees C to 8.0 degrees C, offering some relief from the ongoing chill.

3. Rajasthan

Dense fog is expected in the mornings, particularly in the western parts of the state.

- Minimum temperature: 5-10 degrees C

- Maximum temperature: 18-23 degrees C

While there is no immediate cold wave, chilly weather will persist throughout the region, with generally clear skies.

4. Punjab

Very dense fog is anticipated in the mornings and evenings, with visibility dropping below 50 metres in some areas.

- Minimum temperature: 4-8 degrees C

- Maximum temperature: 15-18 degrees C

Light rain is possible in isolated parts of the state, and the ongoing cold conditions mean that travel during the early hours may be hazardous.

5. Haryana

Dense fog is expected in the mornings, with regions like Chandigarh experiencing extremely thick fog.

- Minimum temperature: 4-9 degrees C

- Maximum temperature: 16-20 degrees C

There is a chance of light rain starting from the January 19. This will further disrupt visibility and travel, especially for train and flight services.
