Weather Update: With the onset of December, a severe cold wave has swept across North India, with temperatures continuing to drop rapidly. Several states are now under cold wave alerts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange warnings for intense cold and dense fog across nearly 15 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Rajasthan on Friday.
Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh Weather
People in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are suffering from severe cold. Temperatures in many places in Kashmir remain consistently below freezing, while in Himachal Pradesh, minimum temperatures are rapidly falling, reaching below normal in many places. In the tribal districts of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, temperatures have plummeted to well below freezing, freezing natural water sources.
Light fog enveloped many parts of Kashmir on Thursday morning. The lowest temperature was recorded at Zoji La Pass, where it was minus 18 degrees Celsius. The minimum temperature in Jammu was 8.6 degrees Celsius. Bhaderwah recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the Jammu division at 1.4 degrees Celsius.
Trees in the upper reaches of Kashmir and Ladakh are covered in snow. Water sources have also partially frozen. In Himachal Pradesh, the average minimum temperature dropped by 0.2 degrees in the past 24 hours.
Punjab Weather
In Punjab, Faridkot recorded a minimum temperature of 4.9 degrees Celsius. Chandigarh recorded 6.9 degrees Celsius, while Ambala in Haryana recorded 8.7 degrees Celsius and Hisar recorded 6.4 degrees Celsius. Fatehpur in Sikar district of Rajasthan was the coldest at 4 degrees Celsius.
Odisha Weather
Normal life was severely disrupted in parts of Odisha due to the cold. Minimum temperatures dropped below 10 degrees Celsius in at least 15 places in 11 of the state's 30 districts. Semiliguda, a hill station in Koraput district, recorded a low of 3.5 degrees Celsius.
