Snowfall Alert: Several parts of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh experienced fresh snowfall and rain on Sunday, while night-time temperatures saw an increase across northern India.

Snowfall was reported in the higher altitudes of Pahalgam in Anantnag district and Qazigund in Kulgam district, while many areas in south Kashmir, including Srinagar, were affected by rainfall.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar recorded 2 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, rising from 0.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The coldest location in the Union Territory was the ski resort of Gulmarg in Baramulla district, where temperatures dropped to minus 7 degrees Celsius.

Pahalgam saw a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius, an increase from minus 2.6 degrees Celsius the night before.

A 20-day period of Chillai Khurd (small cold) began on Saturday, following the end of the 40-day Chillai-Kalan, the harshest phase of winter. This will be followed by the 10-day Chillai Bachha (baby cold), as reported by officials.

The IMD has predicted light rain and snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir for February 2-3.

Meanwhile, in Himachal Pradesh, a yellow alert has been issued, with snowfall and rain occurring on Sunday.

Shillaroo in Shimla district and Kothi in Kullu district recorded 5 cm of snow, while Kufri received 4 cm. Gondhla village in Lahaul and Spiti received 3 cm, Khadrala in Shimla 2.5 cm, Sangla in Kinnaur 2.1 cm, and Kalpa 0.8 cm.

Manali received the highest rainfall in the state at 10 mm, followed by Sujanpur Tira in Hamirpur district at 7.8 mm. Shimla recorded 4.2 mm of rain, Solan 3.4 mm, Nadaun 2.6 mm, and Nahan 2.4 mm.

The lowest temperature in Himachal Pradesh was recorded at minus 3.6 degrees Celsius in Tabo village, Lahaul and Spiti.

The weather office has indicated that snowfall and rain are expected to continue in the middle and higher hills of the state for February 2-3, while the plains and lower hills will remain dry.
