Weather Update Today: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings for 12 states across the country. According to the IMD, Gujarat, Marathwada, and Maharashtra will experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms until November 5. Light to moderate rain is also likely in parts of Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana, while snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Northeast Weather Update
In the Northeast, the IMD has warned of heavy rain and thunderstorms in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with heavy rain likely on November 4.
A western disturbance is currently active over North India, bringing rain to Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand and improving weather conditions. While light rain was recorded in parts of Uttar Pradesh, clear skies are expected from November 6 to 8, though falling temperatures are likely due to cold winds from the mountains.
Gujarat and Marathwada Issued Yellow Alert
In Gujarat and Marathwada, a yellow alert has also been issued for thunderstorms and lightning, with rain predicted for the next 5-7 days. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are expected to face thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, and fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
UN Environment Programme Warning
Meanwhile, a UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report warns that the world is off-track in meeting its climate goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 Degree Celsius under the Paris Agreement. Even if all current national commitments are fully implemented, global temperatures could still rise by 2.3 Degree Celsius to 2.5 Degree Celsius this century, only slightly below last year’s projection of 2.6 to 2.8 Degree Celsius. The report cautions that the 1.5 Degree Celsius threshold could be crossed within the next decade, underscoring the urgent need for stronger global climate action.
