Weather Update: North India is set to witness a fresh change in weather as winter conditions intensify once again. The India Meteorological Department has forecast a spell of rain, snowfall and strong winds across the region due to the arrival of two back-to-back western disturbances over the next week.
According to India Meteorological Department, the first weather system will remain active between January 22 and 23, while a second and stronger disturbance is expected to affect the region from January 26 to 28. These systems are likely to bring widespread changes across the hills and plains of northwest India.
Weather Update: Snowfall likely in hill states
Hilly regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are expected to see rain and snowfall between January 22 and 26.
Heavy snowfall is forecast in the Kashmir Valley on January 22 and 23, while higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive intense snowfall on January 23. The fresh snow is likely to worsen cold wave conditions in the mountains.
Weather Update: Rain and winds in the plains
In the plains, light to moderate rainfall is expected in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, western Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and parts of Rajasthan from January 22 to 24. Eastern Uttar Pradesh may also receive rain on January 23 and 24.
Meteorologists have also warned of strong winds ranging from 30 to 50 kmph, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in several areas.
Weather Update: Cold Conditions To Intensify
Weather experts said that while rainfall may help reduce air pollution levels, cold north-westerly winds could lead to a fresh drop in temperatures. This may trigger another cold spell after the rain and snow, similar to the severe chill experienced earlier this month.
From January 23, strong winds are likely to affect both eastern and western parts of Uttar Pradesh, adding to the winter discomfort.
Delhi-NCR Weather Forecast
Delhi-NCR is currently witnessing milder conditions, with minimum temperatures staying above 7 degrees Celsius and daytime temperatures near 26 degrees Celsius. However, the capital may receive its first rain of the winter on January 23, followed by another wet spell between January 26 and 28. Light rain could also impact Republic Day celebrations.
Overall, North India is expected to experience a renewed spell of biting winter with changes in temperature, wind, fog and humidity over the coming days.
