Himachal Weather Update: Orange Alert For Heavy Snowfall In Shimla And Manali; Rain Forecast For Jan 22-24

The weather pattern in Himachal Pradesh has started to shift, with a possibility of rain and snowfall predicted for the next three days. This brings hope for relief from the prolonged dry spell in the region. On Tuesday, light snowfall was recorded on the state's high peaks, including the Baralacha, Kunzum and Rohtang passes.

Orange And Yellow Alerts Issued

The Meteorological Centre, Shimla, has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for heavy snowfall, rain, and gusty winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph for three days, from January 22 to January 24. While the weather is expected to remain clear on January 21, a warning has been issued for widespread rain and snowfall starting from the night of January 22 until the morning of January 24. An advisory has been issued in this regard.

Heavy Snowfall Expected On January 23

Due to an active Western Disturbance, an Orange alert for heavy snowfall has been issued for the upper reaches of Chamba, Kullu, Kinnaur, and Lahaul-Spiti on January 23. There is also a likelihood of snowfall in Naldehra, Manali, Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, and Solang Valley on the same day.

Weather Forecast For January 26-27 And Temperature Drop

A Yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Una, Bilaspur, and Kangra. Additionally, a 'Cold Day' Yellow alert has been sounded for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, and Mandi. Following this spell, heavy snowfall and rain are again expected on January 26 and 27. Due to the heavy rain and snow, daytime temperatures are likely to drop by 6 to 8 degrees Celsius.

Cold Wave And Current Conditions

Snowfall on the mountains has triggered a cold wave across the state. On Tuesday, high-altitude areas received snow, while light clouds were observed in places like Shimla in the afternoon. Winds blew at speeds of 35 kmph in Reckong Peo and 33 kmph in Bajaura. A cold wave swept through Berthin in Bilaspur, as well as Hamirpur and Mandi, resulting in a dip of one to three degrees in minimum temperatures.

Risk Of Slippery Roads And Disruption

Due to the active Western Disturbance and heavy snowfall between January 22 and 24, there is a risk of low visibility and vehicles slipping on roads. There is also a possibility of partial damage to weak structures. Furthermore, disruptions to traffic, as well as electricity and water supplies, are anticipated.
