The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has said severe heat will persist for the coming days in states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Punjab. In Rajasthan, the heatwave is expected to get more intense in the days to come. In Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR region, temperatures are likely to remain above normal, and the prolonged hot days could adversely affect lives and livelihoods.
Heavy rainfall is expected along India’s coastal regions, from Kerala to Maharashtra. The weather department has issued a rain alert for Mumbai today. For the past two days, this region has been experiencing heavy rainfall.

Weather conditions over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal remain favourable for the monsoon. A cyclonic circulation is rapidly moving inland, carrying a large amount of moisture from the sea. The monsoon has already crossed the entire Andaman and Nicobar region and half of Sri Lanka, moving northward. With this development, it is evident that the monsoon can hit Kerala in the next few days.
The IMD has already announced that the monsoon will reach the Kerala coast by May 27. Weather experts believe it could arrive two to three days earlier. Last year as well, the monsoon reached Kerala two days before the forecasted date.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra has also hinted at an early monsoon onset. A significant shift in weather conditions is expected in the next three to four days. The Bay of Bengal is currently calm, but a cyclonic system is developing there and is gradually strengthening.
In the Arabian Sea, significant activity is being observed. A strong low-pressure area has formed, which could turn into a cyclone within a day or two. This system could help the monsoon enter Kerala, and it is likely to progress rapidly thereafter.
The monsoon could also arrive early in Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha. It may reach other states nearly a week before the expected dates.
India is currently experiencing two distinct weather patterns– heavy rainfall in the south and intense heat in the north. A new spell of rain is expected to begin in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from May 24.
Due to the strengthening cyclonic systems in the Bay of Bengal, heavy to very heavy rainfall is predicted in southern states. Meanwhile, the weather in northern India is expected to remain dry for the next three to four days.
