The cold wave in northern India is intensifying, with temperatures dropping significantly due to continuous rainfall in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder, over the next three days in these regions. There is also a high probability of heavy rainfall and hailstorms in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, as well as surrounding states.

Severe Snowfall Disrupts Life In Kashmir, Uttarakhand And Himachal Pradesh

Heavy snowfall has severely impacted normal life in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The weather has turned troublesome for tourists visiting these regions to enjoy the snowfall. Due to the snowfall, Kashmir Valley has been cut off from the rest of the country by both air and land. Besides, in Himachal Pradesh, four national highways and 319 roads have been closed due to heavy snow.

At Srinagar Airport, 38 flights were either delayed or cancelled due to poor visibility and heavy snowfall. In Uttarakhand, the Tawaghat-Lipulekh route, which connects to the China border, has been closed near Bundi due to heavy snowfall and rainfall. In Manali, 78 mm of rain was recorded in just 24 hours, marking the highest rainfall in 14 years.

Disruptions In Connectivity In Uttarakhand

In Uttarakhand, approximately 100 villages have been cut off from the road network due to the ongoing snowstorm and freezing temperatures. The entire state is experiencing severe cold weather, making life difficult for its residents. Meanwhile, Delhi broke a 101-year-old rainfall record, with 41.2 mm of rain recorded on Friday, surpassing the previous record of 75.7 mm set in 1923.

Snowfall Likely To Continue In Coming Days

The weather department has predicted more snowfall in the valley's major areas over the next 24 hours. In Himachal Pradesh, heavy snow is expected in high-altitude regions, with some areas also receiving rainfall. The minimum temperature in most districts of the Kashmir valley is already below freezing.

Punjab, Rajasthan Witness Persistent Rainfall

In Punjab, rainfall continued for the second consecutive day on Saturday, resulting in a 6°C drop in temperatures. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for dense fog and cold wave conditions in the state from December 29 to January 3. Meanwhile, Rajasthan has also experienced continuous rainfall over the last two days, contributing to a further temperature drop and increased cold.
