West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 Date: The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the polling schedule and date of result declaration for the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal.

According to the EC, the voting for the 294-seat Assembly will take place in two phases. The first phase of polling will be held on April 23, while the second phase will be held on April 29. 152 assembly constituencies will go to polls in phase one, and the remaining 142 will go to polls in the final phase  

The tenure of the West Bengal Assembly is to end on May 7. The state will have a total of 80,719 polling stations with 19,708 in urban and 61,011 in rural areas.

Phase I

  • Date of Issue of Gazette Notification: March 30 (Monday)
  • Last Date for making Nominations: April 06 (Monday)
  • Date for the scrutiny of Nominations: April 7 (Tuesday)
  • Last date for the withdrawal of candidatures: April 9 (Thursday)
  • Date of Polling: April 23 (Thursday)

Phase II

  • Date of Issue of Gazette Notification: April 2 (Thursday)
  • Last Date for making Nominations: April 9 (Thursday)
  • Last date for the withdrawal of candidatures: April 10 (Friday)
  • Date of Polling: April 29 (Wednesday)

Counting and results

  • Date of Counting: May 4 (Monday)
  • Date before which the election shall be completed: May 6 (Wednesday)

The state is set to witness a key battle among the ruling Trinamool Congress, led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the BJP and Congress, as the results will carry implications for national politics. The announcement of the schedule came after the poll body visited Kolkata a few days back and reviewed preparedness.

The BJP has been trying for a long time to uproot the TMC. In the run-up to the assembly election, the BJP and TMC have been engaged in a relentless clash, especially over the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The TMC has accused the poll body of colluding with the saffron party to disenfranchise the eligible voters of their party. The BJP, however, accused the TMC of shielding the fake voters, illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas for political gains.
