The Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday released the first list of 144 candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. As per the list, Suvendu Adhikari is once again pitted from Bhabanipur, a seat he contested in 2021 against CM Mamata Banerjee.

Bengal is set to go to the polls in two phases this time, unlike previous elections, when voting used to take place in 8 phases. The Election Commission on Sunday announced the schedule for the assembly elections in four states and a UT, including West Bengal.

Political parties are racing to release candidate lists after the poll schedule announcement. The Left Front, without waiting for an alliance with the Congress, the ISF, and the newly formed party of suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, has released its first list of candidates.

The ruling Trinamool Congress is expected to release its list on Tuesday. The BJP released the first list after a crucial meeting on Monday.
