Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday released its third list of candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections. The list comprises the names of 19 candidates, with the surprising candidature of the RG Kar gangrape and murder case victim's mother from Panihati.

RG Kar gangrape and murder victim, who was named Abhaya, was a post-graduate trainee doctor at the government institution. She was gangraped on August 9, 2024. The incident had shocked the nation, prompting protests across the country.

The medical associations and the entire medical fraternity went on strike, demanding strict action. The case became a major political issue and raised serious questions on the law and order, and women's security under the CM Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government.

In January 2025, the main accused, Sanjoy Roy, was found guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment. 

BJP names 275 candidates

The saffron party has so far fielded 275 candidates. The first list with the names of 145 candidates was released on March 17. The list included the name of LoP Suvendu Adhikari from Bhabanipur and Nandigram.

The BJP released its second list of 111 candidates on March 19. The list included some prominent names, including former Union Minister Nisith Pramanik, actress Roopa Ganguly, and former IPS officer Dr Rajesh Kumar (Jagatdal).
