West Bengal Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts of Bengal, including Kolkata. A Yellow Alert has been issued for the city until October 5, warning of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. The rainfall is expected to peak on Dashami, October 2, the final day of Durga Puja celebrations. According to IMD classifications, 64.5-115.5 mm of rainfall is considered heavy, while 115.6-204.4 mm is categorised as very heavy.

The IMD bulletin read: “Light to moderate rain/thundershower very likely to occur at most places over South Bengal with Heavy to very Heavy Rainfall (07-20 cm) very likely to occur at one or two places South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, North 24 Parganas and Hooghly districts.”

The IMD has urged residents to brace for waterlogging in low-lying areas and underpasses, along with potential traffic congestion, between October 2 and 4.

North Bengal Weather Update

North Bengal is unlikely to escape the inclement weather on Dashami. The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall (7–20 cm) in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Coochbehar, North Dinajpur, Malda, and South Dinajpur districts.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and winds of 30–40 kmph are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday in East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, and Hooghly districts. On Friday, heavy rainfall (7–11 cm) is likely in Murshidabad, Birbhum, East and West Burdwan, Nadia, Bankura, Purulia, and Hooghly districts.

October 1: Min 27 Degree Celsius, Max 32  Degree Celsius; generally cloudy with 1-2 spells of rain or thundershowers, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h.

October 2: Min 25  Degree Celsius, Max 30  Degree Celsius; generally cloudy with heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 km/h.

October 3: Min 25  Degree Celsius, Max 29  Degree Celsius; generally cloudy with a few spells of rain or thundershowers, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h.

October 4: Min 26  Degree Celsius, Max 30  Degree Celsius; generally cloudy with 1-2 spells of rain or thundershowers, accompanied by thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h.

October 5 will see a minimum temperature of 27  Degree Celsius and a maximum of 31  Degree Celsius, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph.

October 6 will have a minimum temperature of 27  Degree Celsius and a maximum of 32  Degree Celsius, with thunderstorms expected.

Kolkata’s weather on Dashami may dampen the spirits of Durga Puja revelers. According to the IMD, the city, along with West Midnapore, Jhargram, East Burdwan, Howrah, Nadia, Murshidabad, and Birbhum, is likely to experience heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm.
