A woman allegedly sold her six-day-old granddaughter to a child trafficking racket in West Bengal’s Nadia district. The incident came to light after the mother of the infant filed a missing complaint at a local police station in Santipur on Monday morning. Police said that the accused is currently on the run and efforts are on to nab her.
After an initial investigation, the police found out that not only the accused grandmother, identified as Khaleda Bibi is absconding but another woman who is suspected to have acted as an agent to sell the baby is also missing.
According to the police, the complainant gave birth on October 9 and three days later, she went to her mother’s place with the newborn following which on October 15 her child went missing. The woman also alleged that her mother had been pressuring her to sell the child.

On Monday the accused admitted to having sold the infant for Rs 60,000 with the help of a local agent who is currently absconding. Police have registered a case against the accused and her accomplice and started a search operation to find the missing girl.

The woman said that his husband works outside West Bengal and she thought it was wise to go to her mother’s home after giving birth. “I just want the police to track my daughter and bring her back to me. I also expect them to punish my mother who could commit such a heinous crime,” the woman said as reported by news agency IANS.
