Nagaland got its first medical college after 60 years of achieving statehood. Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya along with Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio formally inaugurated the Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMSR) at Phreibagei in Kohima on Saturday. 

Earlier, Nagaland was the only state in the northeast region without a medical college. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya expressed happiness that Nagaland got its own medical college which will benefit the medical students but also help to enhance the research in the medical field to resolve the health issues in the region. 

Mandaviya claimed that the seats in the country’s medical colleges have almost doubled during the NDA regime. He said the central government is committed to the holistic development of the health sector of Nagaland and the complete northeast region as a whole.

Nagaland CM Neiphiu Rio said the opening of NIMSR was a historic event and a fulfilment of the state’s long-standing demand. He said the state had been suffering from a lack of doctors and poor quality of secondary and tertiary health care for a long time. 

CM Rio said that the new medical college would ensure better healthcare delivery. He wished that the college would become a leading institution and contribute to the development and advancement of the whole nation.

NIMSR got approval from the National Medical Commission to admit its first 100 MBBS students for its first academic session in 2023-24. Out of the 100 seats, 85 were given to Nagaland and 15 to the India quota.
