The Indian Army soldiers and the border residents of Ladakh have started getting the benefits of the communication revolution as mobile phones have started ringing in some areas of Siachen Glacier and Eastern Ladakh. This was made possible due to the campaign to strengthen the communication infrastructure in the border areas in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
In western Ladakh, Indian Army Corps of Signals have installed a mobile tower at a height of 15,500 feet on Siachen Glacier, the first of its kind in the region. This has enabled the soldiers to connect with their relatives and access 4G internet facilities in the highly challenged weather conditions. More mobile towers are planned to be installed in the Siachen area soon for better connectivity.
In eastern Ladakh, Airtel has installed its tower in Yurgo village, located close to the Line of Actual Control with China. This has connected this remote area through mobile, which was previously cut off from the rest of the country. The soldiers and ITBP personnel deployed in the area were earlier facing several problems due to lack of mobile towers. Now there is hope that mobile facilities will soon be started in other villages of the area also.

Councilor of this area Kunchok Stanjin praised Airtel and said that mobile services were an essential need of the people. He expressed hope that Airtel will fulfill the long standing demand of the people by installing mobile towers in the villages of Phobrang, Pengang, Maan, Merak, Chartse, Naklungpa and Kargyam in eastern Ladakh.
The administration is also trying its best to ensure that mobile companies extend their services to remote areas. Along with strengthening the communication infrastructure, work is being done vigorously towards strengthening the tourism infrastructure also in the border areas of Ladakh.
