What Expert Said On The Issue
Medical experts urged parents to avoid the widespread practice of self-medicating children with over-the-counter (OTC) cough syrups. Dr Piyush Upadhyay, a paediatric gastroenterologist at the Lohia Institute, Lucknow, said Dextromethorphan, a common cough suppressant, affects the part of the brain that signals the body to cough. An overdose can severely impact a child's nervous system, breathing capacity, kidneys, liver, and even the heart, he added.
