Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai on Sunday criticised the central government for what he termed as “big talk and no action” following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. Rai mocked the government’s response, questioning why Rafale fighter jets, acquired with much fanfare, remain unused.

Holding a toy model of a Rafale jet with a lemon and chillies hanging from it, Rai claimed that terrorists are killing our youth and the Rafales are in hangars with ‘nimbu-mirchi’ to ward off evil.

"Terrorist activities have increased in the country, and people are suffering from it. Our youth lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack... But, this government, which talks a lot, says that they will crush terrorists - they brought Rafale, but they are in their hangars having chilly and lemon hanging in them. When will they take action against terrorists, those who support them, and their backers," the Congress leader said as quoted by news agency ANI.

BJP leader CR Kesavan condemned Rai’s comments as an attack on the morale of India’s armed forces. He accused the Congress party of repeatedly trying to demoralise the military and labelled Ajay Rai’s remarks as “deplorable.” Kesavan said that such statements were part of a larger “sinister ploy” by the Congress to weaken India’s national resolve.

Echoing the sentiment, BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari criticised Rai on social media, referring to him as a “close aide” of Rahul Gandhi and alleging that Congress has turned into a spokesperson for Pakistan’s interests.

The Pahalgam terror attack, which occurred on April 22, led to an emergency meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security. Officials cited cross-border linkages and said the attack was aimed at disrupting J&K’s political and economic progress. The government has vowed strong retaliation, asserting that those responsible will face severe consequences.

The NDA government in the centre reaffirmed its commitment to giving the armed forces full operational freedom in responding to terrorism. In addition, the Centre has suspended the Indus Water Treaty and convened an all-party meeting to build consensus on national security. Opposition parties have supported any tough measures to combat terrorism.
