Indian Railways: Indian Railways, a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Railways, manages the fourth-largest railway network globally. Railways, which is a crucial mode of transportation for both freight and passengers, is also known as the 'life line of the country'. Indian Railways transports over 2.3 crore passengers daily, which is more than the combined population of Australia, New Zealand, and Tasmania.
The Railways network is headed by a Railway Board whose chairman reports to the Ministry of Railways and is divided into 19 operational zones geographically.
As of 2024, it has a track length of 135,207 km (84,014 mi), running track length of 109,748 km (68,194 mi), and route length of 69,181 km (42,987 mi), of which 96.59 per cent of the broad-gauge network is electrified.
