Chennai's new Commissioner of Police, A Arun took charge on Monday after the Tamil Nadu government transferred Sandeep Rai Rathore as Commissioner of Police, Greater Chennai earlier in the day. The reshuffle of senior IPS officers comes in the backdrop of the sensational murder of state’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader K Armstrong by armed assailants last week.

Chennai Commissioner of Police A Arun: Educational Background Of A Arun
A Arun studied mechanical engineering following which he appeared for the Civil Service Examination. Interestingly, he chose to be a part of Indian Police Service (IPS) and not the mainstream Indian Administrative Service (IAS)
Chennai Commissioner of Police A Arun: A 1998 Batch IPS Officer
A Arun is a 1998 batch IPS officer. He replaces Sandeep Rai Rathore who has now been posted as DGP, Police Training College, Chennai. He will hold the additional charge of Director, Tamil Nadu Police Academy.
Chennai Commissioner of Police A Arun: Earlier Stints In Career
Arun had earlier worked as the deputy commissioner of police in Anna Nagar and St Thomas Mount, joint commissioner of police and additional commissioner of police of traffic. He had served as Commissioner of police, Trichy before moving to Chennai in November 2017.
On Monday, A Arun asserted that he will bring ‘rowdies to their knees’ as he took charge as the city's new police. “The criminal elements will be taught in a way they understand,” Arun told reporters in an interaction shortly after taking charge.
The senior IPS officer also talked about encounters. He said, “There is no such things as an encounter,” adding that ‘regular and professional policing' will bring down criminal activities in Tamil Nadu's capital city.
“Law and order maintenance, prevention of crimes, and proper investigation of crimes, and curbing rowdyism, are my priorities,” Arun further added.
