Gwalior Circle Superintendent of Police (CSP), Hina Khan, is grabbing headlines and online praise for her calm behaviour in the face of a charged mob led by a local advocate. A muslim by faith, Khan was accused of being ‘anti-Sanatan’ by the group as she stopped their protest. In reply, the CSP replied that her hands were tied in this case and that the orders came directly from the SDM.

The SDM had earlier ordered the imposition of Section 163 BNSS after tensions over the installation of an Ambedkar statue in the premises of Gwalior High Court. One group wanted the installation of the statue in the court premises, while the other group, led by the Bar Council President, opposed the same.

With a ban on gatherings, as many as 4,000 security personnel were deployed across the city. Flouting these rules, former Bar Association president Anil Mishra and his supporters planned to recite the Sundarkand at the local Siddeshwar Temple located at the city centre, where religious recitations take place regularly on every Tuesday. But they were stopped by the City Superintendent of Police (CSP), Hina Khan, which ignited tensions between the police and the protesters.

Mishra accused Khan of being ‘anti-Sanatan’ and began chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slogans. In response, the CSP replied calmly, saying ‘Jai Shree Ram’ in return while maintaining eye contact. Khan clarified that the decisions were not taken at her own discretion, but came from an order from the SDM.

Hina Khan’s firm yet empathetic approach prevented the crowd’s emotions from escalating.
