Shashi Tharoor News: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday clarified that he will not receive the “Veer Savarkar Award", asserting that he was not aware of such a development. It was irresponsible on the part of the organisers to announce my name without my consent, the Congress MP said in a note shared on X.

"I have come to know from media reports that I have been named a recipient of the "Veer Savarkar Award," which is to be presented today in Delhi. I only learned about this announcement yesterday in Kerala, where I had gone to vote in the local self-government elections. There in Thiruvananthapuram, responding to media queries, I had clarified that I was neither aware of, nor had accepted, such an award, and it was irresponsible on the part of the organisers to announce my name without my having agreed to receive it. Despite that, today in Delhi, some media outlets continue to ask the same question. Therefore, I am issuing this statement to clarify the matter unequivocally," his statement read.

In the absence of clarifications about the nature of the award, the organisation presenting it or any other contextual details, the question of my attending the event today or accepting the award does not arise, he added.

Tharoor's party, Congress, has been critical of Veer Savarkar, saying the freedom fighter had apologised to the British, seeking relief from the jail term.

Congress Takes Swipe At Tharoor For Attending Putin Event

Tharoor has been criticised by his party colleague in the last few months for going off the party line on several issues, including the Operation Sindoor and the recent Russian President Vladimir Putin's event held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. The Congress on Friday said Leaders of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have not been invited to the banquet for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and took a swipe at its own MP, Tharoor for accepting the invite.

Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said this government is known to be breaching all protocols. Asked about party MP Tharoor getting invited to the banquet and accepting the invitation, Khera said, "Ask Mr. Tharoor. All of us who are in the party, if our leaders don't get invited and we get invited, we need to question our own conscience and listen to our conscience. Politics has been played in inviting or not inviting people, which in itself is questionable and those who accept such an invite is also questionable," Khera said.
