The Women's Reservation Bill that seeks to provide a 33 per cent quota for women in Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday during the ongoing five-day special session of the parliament. The bill has been named Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.

"This bill is in relation to women empowerment. By amending Article 239AA of the Constitution, 33% of seats will be reserved for women in the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi. Article 330A reservations of seats for SC/ST in the House of people," Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said.

Here's How Political Leaders Reacted To The Landmark Bill

-"I want to thank PM Modi for taking the long struggle of women to its destiny. The Women's Reservation Bill introduced in the Lok Sabha will define the leadership of women in our country... PM Modi announced the women-led development and the whole world accepted it in the G20... This is a political gimmick for the opposition because the opposition and Congress did not give reservation to women even when they were in power," said Union Minister Smriti Irani.

-"The first session of the new Parliament has been dedicated to women empowerment and upliftment...PM Modi has kept women as the priority...This is fantastic," Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut said.

-"NDA government is about to complete 10 years. If they had done this earlier, women would have had a chance to participate in large numbers in the 2024 elections. But it is better late than never, it is a good thing... This will be an important step in the progress of the country," said PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti.

-"I am happy it is tabled. It is in Lok Sabha already... We are really hoping that it will pass in the Lok Sabha tomorrow and go to Rajya Sabha as soon as possible and then get passed in this session itself. Whatever I was expressing yesterday that worry has come true because introducing it in the Rajya Sabha consensus of various parties, stretching out a hand of friendship by the ruling government is essential. I hope the government will come forward to do that... Very Very happy it is introduced," BRS MLC K Kavitha said.

-"Let it come...We have implemented it here at the levels that were appropriate for us in the Panchayats and local bodies. We did it much before the Govt of India, much before August 5, 2019. We have never opposed the process of reservation so that women get their rightful place in the decision-making of this country," National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said.

-"This reservation bill had been promised by the BJP before the 2014 elections...Now they have brought this bill...This bill just ensures that women are going to be deprived till the next census, till the next delimitation exercise. In other words, in the 2024 elections and in the Constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha, we will not have 1/3rd women in Parliament, or many of the state assemblies because this delayed action by PM Modi's govt has resulted once again in ensuring inequality for women for the next so many years," CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat said.
